Cowboy Mounted Shooting started out west about 14 years ago. It finally made its way to Delaware, about 7 years ago.

One of its main objectives is to keep the old west alive.
The contestants wear period clothes, pre-1900s and shoot a 45 caliber old west style gun, loaded with black powder blanks.

Our spectators are also encouraged to breakout their old west clothes and join the era, as well.

Our sport is a family-oriented event; and, we have classes for just about any age group.

The Wranglers, 12 and under, is our youngest group.
They ride the course on horseback without a gun. Then we set up balloons on the side of the ring for them to practice shooting (on-foot), with a parent by their side, as safety
ALWAYS comes first.

Because of the nature of our sport, we have a certified range master in the ring at all times to ensure that safety is always practiced.

Next, there are our Men’s, Women’s and Junior division riders who complete the course with a loaded gun, on horseback.

We also have a Senior division for our old-timers, whose gun slinging days have perhaps slowed down a bit, but are far from being over.

The object of the game is to:
#1,. . .BE SAFE
#2. . . Have fun
Then comes . . .beat the timer.

  • The riders go through a pattern of five balloons, trying not to miss even one. Then there is the run down: usually there are five balloons in a straight line, heading home. Whoever gets all ten balloons, running the correct pattern with the fastest time, wins.
  • If a shooter misses a balloon, or knocks over a barrel there is a 5 second penalty added to their time.
  • If a shooter Doesn’t follow the prescribed pattern correctly it is noted as a procedural and there is 10 seconds added to their time.

And one last thing, the louder the crowd hollers for the horse to go faster, the faster the horse will go. Horses love to show off. :O)

Hope to see you there!

1st State Shooters first shoot of this year will be held at Levers Arena on April 30 at 6 pm
